A Legal Document Assistant (LDA) is a self-employed legal professional who is licensed and bonded in the County where they do business and who assists the public in the preparation of a variety of legal documents. Prior to 2001, LDAs in California were referred to as “Independent Paralegals”. Today, LDAs must have a combination of education and experience to qualify for registration under Business and Professions Code section 6400. LDAs are prohibited by law from giving legal advice, but can refer the public to published materials and information.
